While ECUs like Mercury3 can directly control smart coils, basic coils require an external driver like the Orion series. This 4-way version features four independent driver channels, allowing precise spark timing in direct fire applications for 4-cylinder engines. It also supports wasted spark configurations, making it flexible for different wiring strategies and freeing up ECU resources for other functions like injectors or solenoids.

Built with high-voltage negative drivers, the Orion Coil Driver delivers up to 500V primary voltage, translating to an impressive 50kV secondary output, depending on coil specifications. To prevent overheating, it’s crucial to configure the coil charge time correctly—typically not exceeding 5.5 amps. Refer to your ECU manual for charge settings.
